May 9 MILAN
Arrive in Milan and transfer to the hotel at your own expense. Tonight we will gather and enjoy a welcome dinner together at a local restaurant. (D)
May 10 MILAN - EXCURSION TO BERGAMO
This morning after breakfast we will enjoy a tour of Milan, the fashion capital of Europe and home to top designer flagship stores such as Armani, Versace, Prada, Gucci, to name a few. The city is steeped in history and boasts the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world, where we will stop to visit. We will then enjoy a walk under the glass dome of the Galleria, lined with shops and restaurants. At the end of the Galleria we shall see the celebrated opera house La Scala where many premiers took places. We then head out of Milan and stop for lunch enroute to Bergamo. A UNESCO World Heritage site, nestled at the foothills of the Alps, Bergamo consists of the Medieval Upper Town and the modern Lower Town. During our visit, we see the Cathedral, Torre del Campanone (tower), and Castello di San Vigilio with views of nearby Mount Bastia and the old Breno valley. We return to Milan where you are on your own for dinner. (B,L)
May 11 MILAN - LAKE GARDA - VERONA - PADUA
This morning after breakfast at the hotel we depart Milan and head East to Padua. Our journey along the shores of Lake Garda taking in the natural scenery, brilliant colors, the Dolomites of Brent and the gentle slopes of the morainic hills. This area is rich in vegetation including lemon trees, oleanders, magnolias and bougainvillea. We continue on to Verona where we will enjoy a walking tour to see Juliet's Balcony and the ancient Roman Arena (outside only). We then board our coach again and travel on to Padua where we will have an orientation tour of the city. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 12 PADUA - VENICE
After breakfast this morning we head northeast to the city of Venice. After checking into your hotel, a local guide will take you on a delightful walking tour of the "City of Islands". On our tour, we will see St. Mark's Square and Basilica, the Bell Tower and the Clock Tower and the Bridge of Sighs. Our tour will conclude with a classical gondola ride on the famous canals of Venice. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 13 VENICE
After breakfast this morning we will visit a traditional Mask shop where there will be a demonstration on how Venetian masks are made using authentic materials including cartapesta. Learn about the decades of tradition and technique and the history of the Venetian carnival masks and their role in everyday life. The balance of the day is yours free to explore the city of Venice. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 14 VENICE - BOLOGNA
This morning after breakfast we will board our coach and travel south to Bologna, a medieval city that is home to the world's oldest university. This afternoon we will enjoy a walking tour of Bologna. Your tour offers views of the famous leaning towers of Asinelli and Garisenda before you enter the famous Quadilateral market - a mix of old and new shops featuring food of every nature. During your visit to the market we will be able to taste some samples. Our tour continues out of the market to visit the Pizza Maggiore, the incomplete Basilica di San Petronio and the famous Neptune Fountain. Dinner is included this evening.(B,D)
May 15 EXCURSION OUTSIDE OF BOLOGNA
This morning we will depart early to visit a Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese Factory. Step back into the past and learn the secrets of this unique cheese. Your tour will end with a small sampling of aged parmigiana. This afternoon step into the world of Lamborghini and take a factory tour to see the unique experience of craftmanship and technology come together in the assembly of the V12 Aventador. Enjoy some time in the museum afterword where you can journey into the past to see the history behind these famous cars. We return in the afternoon to Bologna. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 16 BOLOGNA - FLORENCE
This morning we board our coach and drive south to the city of Florence, an "open air museum city". Enjoy a visit to the Duomo to view the cupola by Brunelleschi, and hear the history of the baptistery. Stop in Piazza della Signoria where you will find many statues created by famous artists. Our tour concludes at the Academy of Fine Arts home to Michelangelo's David. We board our coach and continue on to our Tuscan Villa, which retains the articulated architecture of a millenary history, however it also spent many years as a Benedictine monastery, then was converted to a nobleman's elegant villa and finally a hotel residence. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 17 EXCURSION TO PISA AND LUCCA
Lucca and Pisa are home to some of Italy's most captivating sights. Lucca is an enchanting fort city that lies inside of the area's only originally intact and preserved Renaissance era walls. Your introduction to Lucca will begin with a guided walking tour along these ancient walls, through cobble-stoned streets and piazzas. This almost perfectly preserved jewel of medieval architecture emanates charm and shows the layers of history from every corner of its narrow winding streets. It was also the birthplace and hometown of the renowned Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. Following your guided tour you will be given free time to enjoy the local eateries before heading off to the once mighty maritime republic of Pisa. Pisa, the birthplace of the famous astronomer and philosopher, Galileo, is home to the famously crooked Leaning Tower. Your tour will guide you through the area leading you to the harmonious square, known as the Field of Miracles. With its stunning white marble facades, you'll want to take your time here to photograph and shop before heading back to your Villa. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 18 TUSCANY
This morning we will enjoy a cooking class with wine tasting where we will all participate in making a classic Italian lunch which we will then sit down to enjoy together. After our relaxing lunch, we head out into the countryside to visit a local Tuscan farm where cashmere goats are raised. Here we will learn about the goats, their daily lives and how the farm harvests the fiber from their coats and processes it into a finished garment. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 19 PERUGIA - ASSISI
This morning we head south to the historic town of Perugia. Here we will enjoy a tour of the Baci Chocolate Museum and Factory, where you will learn about the Love Story behind the making of the chocolate and hear how the recipe has been unchanged for 100 years. Enjoy some free time in Perugia for lunch and exploring before boarding your coach. We continue on to the delightful town of Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. This medieval town is perched on a hill with scenic views of Umbria. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 20 ASSISI
This morning meet your local guide who will guide you through cobblestone streets and alleys, past medieval houses and shops to the Basilica of St Francis where you will find the tomb of St Frances and home to its amazing frescoes by Giotto. Also visit the Basilica of St Clare (Santa Chiara), where there are some garments worn by both Saint Francis and Saint Clare. This afternoon you are free to explore Assisi on your own. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 21 ASSISI - ORVIETO - VITERBO - ROME
This morning we depart Assisi for Rome. First we shall stop in the charming town of Orvieto, perched on a butte of volcanic tuff 1033 feet above the Paglia and Tiber Rivers, this town was once the home away from home for 32 popes. Meet your local guide and take the funicular to the city center and visit the Cathedral, widely considered the finest example of Italian Gothic work. After some free time to explore and shop (Orvieto is also known for its ceramics), we board our coach and head to the medieval walled hilltown of Viterbo. Here we will meet our local guide who will guide us through the historical area with unaltered stone houses, external staircases, little lanes, squares and towers that found in this town. We board our coach for the last time and head into Rome. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 22 ROME
This morning enjoy a tour of the Ancient Roman sights of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. As we arrive at the Colosseum, pass by the Constantine Arch then enter the huge arena dating from 79AD. See the largest amphitheater in the world where ancient Romans watched bloody shows. The next stop is the Roman Forum, where the ancient market place seems to jump to life as we stroll through the ruins. This afternoon is free for you to explore on your own. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 23 ROME
This morning tour the Vatican, the world's smallest, yet wealthiest independent state. Your guide will start the tour with an overview of the history of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. See the Hall of Tapestries and the Maps Gall'ry, but the highlight of the tour will be the Sistine Chapel, where the ceiling is covered with Michelangelo's famous paintings of the "Creation" and "Last Judgment". Then we explore St. Peter's Square, with Bernini's 284 columns, before entering St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in Christendom. See the many treasures including the golden mosaics of the apse, Bernini's bronze baldachin and the famed "Pieta" by Michelangelo. This afternoon is free for you to explore on your own. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)
May 24 ROME
End of our tour. Transfer to the airport at your own expense. (B)
